Benjamin Banneker Analysis Essay

Benjamin Banker shifts from respectful to cynical using allusion, repetition, and negative diction to prove that since all men are created equal, slavery must come to an end. Allusion provides examples for the author and is used to assist the reader with relating to and understanding a point or message. It makes the reader feel connected, and think along the lines of the author. Banker alludes to the Declaration ofIndependence to remind Jefferson of the equality of all American men. This strategy acts as a reminder, and shows Jefferson that he, Banker, is intelligent and aware of his rights. Allusion is also used in the letter when Banker refers to Job, and his advice to his friends about enlarging their hearts with kindness. Thus, explaining how Banker wants Jefferson to feel toward slavery while still maintaining respect. Next, to illustrate the shift in tone, Banker uses repetition.Repetition acts as a sound strategy, reminding the reader of an idea or thought. In this letter, the word â€Å"Side is repeated six times. This is done as a sign of respect toward Jefferson. Repetition of â€Å"sir† sticks in the readers mind and illustrates the principle of status in eighteenth century America and the lack of equality between men. The utilization of negative diction is powerful, and can alter the feelings of the reader. This strategy transformed the initial tone of respect to a cynical tone.Banker for example, uses the words â€Å"groaning captivity', â€Å"cruel oppression†, and â€Å"fraud† to describe slavery and to convey an inhumane and cynical feel. These words make the reader portray Jefferson, and slavery, in a negative light. These three strategies that Banker utilizes show how Jefferson own words that â€Å"all men are created equal† contradict the actions of America, by slavery being allowed. Each strategy alters the thoughts and emotions of the reader, swaying the, to agree with Banker and his liberating beliefs.

The Development of the Comfort Zone and Development Phase Theories Essay

The Development of the Comfort Zone and Development Phase Theories - Essay Example This research will begin with the statement that the comfort zone theory focuses on the situations in which people experience the greatest comfort either mentally or physically. It is usually the brain that interprets the objects or situations that make a person comfortable. This paper illustrates that comfort zones are different for different people and they influence the behavior of individuals. A person’s comfort zone could be engaging in group work while another may be comfortable working alone to accomplish personal goals. The nature of a comfort zone determines the manner in which people react to various issues. The comfort zone maintains the character of a person and may become a hindrance to personal development if there are no opportunities for inventiveness. In other words, the comfort zone might be a barrier to thinking outside of what is already known by an individual. The present research has identified that mental expansion may not be accomplished in such a comfo rt zone. Substantial changes might result from tragedies forcing a person outside the comfort zone. Development phase theory, on the other hand, is based on the hypotheses that development is an irregular process that occurs through a series of phases in which individuals have distinct behaviors. In group development, Tuckman in Wheelan & Conway identifies four phases of development, which include; â€Å"forming, storming, norming and performing†.

China is one of the Main Countries that Export Their Goods to the Essay

China is one of the Main Countries that Export Their Goods to the United States - Essay Example Putting tariffs on the goods from China to the United States has been one of the most controversial debates. There has been a section of the society that have insisted on the importance of, and urgency with which goods from China should be subjected to tariffs. However, another section has warned of possible repercussions should this policy be implemented. This paper seeks to defend the decision to put tariff on tires from China. China remains the main threat to the economy of the United States. This is because it is taking up the markets that were previously a preserve for the United States. It has come up with cheap products in the world market because they have reduced cost of production due to cheap labor in their home country. This has seen them acquire various markets in the world, including the market in the United States. As Sandwick (56) says, although it is good to encourage competition within the economy in order to facilitate fair trade, some competitions are obviously un fair. This scholar points out to the fact that in the process of facilitating fair trade, care should be taken to ensure that none of the players have an unfair advantage over others. The tires from China have been made using very cheap labor back in the parent country. When they are brought to the United States, they come with prices that reflect the cost of labor. There are other firms within the United States producing the same products locally with the cost of labor being much higher than that in China. This local US firm will also bring their products to the American market taking into account the cost of production. When the two competitors meet in the same market, the Chinese firms will have an unfair advantage over other firms. Their prices will definitely be more attractive than those of the local firms. This will result in a situation where these foreign firms will cannibalize the local firms. They would take the largest share of the local market, and due to frustration, t he local firms would be forced out of the market, or be absorbed by the foreign firm. It can be very unfortunate when a foreign firm drives out the local firms from the market. The situation is worsened by the fact that these local firms cannot export to China because back in China, the prices would even be lower and these American firms would need to incur transport and other costs. Other markets around the world have also been taken by these Chinese firms with very cheap products. This would completely eliminate the local firms from the market, a fact that can lead to serious pressure on the economy. Some individuals have argued that China is one of the main countries where the United States exports their products. These pundits argue that by imposing tariffs on the Chinese goods, the Chinese government may respond by imposing the same on the American products coming to their country, a fact that would reduce profits of the American exporters. Although this argument is very valid, a mathematical calculation would still point out that the US stands to lose if the tariffs are not imposed. This is because Chinese export to the US is fast outgrowing its imports from the US. This is even worsened by the fact that the Chinese exports are so cheap, thereby posing serious threats to the US firms. It is a fact that by imposing a tax, the US exporters may feel the pinch. However, it would protect the local firms; hence protecting the local economy from a possible wipeout by the Chinese firms. Rollin argues that

Induvidual 3 ENG Litrature Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1000 words

Induvidual 3 ENG Litrature - Essay Example They wore a lot of make-up, thin bright dresses, tilted slippers fancifully strapped. They looked conspicuous cheap and charming, so much so tht they attracted a lot of attention from the young men around. Their conversation could be considered ordinary and foolish, but typically that of working girls who lived at home with her family and paid half of their salary to its support. It cannot be denied, however, that both had a strong sense of the imaginative as proven by their game of inheriting a million dollars. Like children they were not above having tiffs at the slightest provocation, but making up a little later as though nothing happened. This â€Å"game† was cooked up by Annabel which was no more than the ancient sport of what-would-you-do-if-you-had-a-million-dollars? One must suppose that someone dies and leaves you a million dollars. A condition in the bequest is that the heiress must spend every nickel of the money on herself. This game tells us that both girls long for a change in their socio-economic status. They desire to be wealthy enough to buy clothes worn by wealthy people and accompanying adornments such as pearl necklaces. They were both of the belief that it can’t hurt anyone for after all, it was just a game. Parker was well known for her sharp tongue and malicious wit. This definitely shows in the style of her story. Consider her description of the food the girls ate on weekends, they lunched on sugar, starches, oils and butter-fats. Usually they ate sandwiches of spongy new white bread greased with butter and mayonnaise. They ate thick wedges of cake lying wet beneath ice cream and whipped cream and melted chocolate gritty with nuts. As alternates, they ate patties, sweating beads of infereior ol, containing bits of bland meat bogged in pale, stiffening sauce, etc.† Parker’s witty description of fatty foods

Evaluate the impact of Fairtrade - Essay Example Alternative trade organizations that are based on philosophies of well being of environment, and also social justice are creating new channels for marketing and trade alongside conventional agricultural export sectors. Social responsibility and ethics have become an important factor in consumer marketing which provides an organization with competitive advantage with respect to its competitors. The changes that are brought about by fair trade have to be looked at first to analyze the impacts of fair trade. One has to consider in this regard the changes that were not possible without the existence of fair trade. When the existence of fair trade benefits farmers, they start to control a significant part of the production chain and also employ workers. When farmers who are certified by fair trade employ workers, those workers have a high standard of living and a working condition that is considered better. If workers have a standard of living that is considered better, they will invest more money in their children’s education. Favourable economic opportunities are provided by fair trade to small farming families such that they also get the opportunity to join manufacturing organizations and produce products with market specifications. These farmers are considered to enjoy higher and stable incomes as compared to those farmers that sell in the conventional market. Buyers pay a stable minimum price known as fair trade price to cover the sustainable cost of production. There also exists opportunity for pre-financing and also contracts for long term planning. It also has an increased access to the export markets (Bassett, 2010, pp. 44-49). The fair trade price is considered to have a lot of significance when in the volatile world the prices of commodities and products fall below the cost of production. Importers tend to import the products of fair trade in their respective countries for further processing of such products and to sell those products themselves or
